(SportsNetwork.com) - Colorado may be ahead of the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference standings, but they are a club that the Avalanche may want to avoid in the playoffs. The Canucks, though, are no lock to reach the postseason and they will continue their push for a wild card spot on Thursday night versus the Avs. Vancouver is four points back of Phoenix for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference and has played one more game than the Coyotes, who visit the New Jersey Devils tonight. The Dallas Stars also are one point ahead of the Canucks in the standings and have played two fewer games than Vancouver. That gives the Canucks an uphill battle in reaching the postseason and the squad has responded with its longest winning streak since late December. That includes last nights 5-2 triumph over the Minnesota Wild. David Booth scored twice in the win and Eddie Lack made 29 saves as the Canucks have claimed three straight victories for the first time since Dec. 20-29. Another win tonight would give Vancouver its longest string of victories since a season-best seven-game run from Dec. 1-14. "Were breathing. Thats the most important thing and we found a way tonight," said Canucks head coach John Tortorella. Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Zack Kassian all added goals for a Vancouver squad that was without captain Henrik Sedin due to a left knee injury suffered in Sundays win against the Buffalo Sabres. He is day-to-day and did not travel with the club for its quick two-game road trip that ends tonight. It is unknown if Lack will get another start tonight or if backup Jacob Markstrom will get the call. Neither has ever faced the Avalanche and Markstrom has made just one appearance in relief since coming over in the trade that sent Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers. Whoever gets the call will try to extend the Canucks recent string of success over the Avalanche. Vancouver picked up a 3-1 victory over Colorado at home on Dec. 8 and has won 11 of 12 as well as 19 of the previous 22 encounters. The Canucks also have won 10 of their last 13 trips to Colorado, though they did have a four-game series road win streak snapped in the most recent meeting there on April 13 of last season. The Avs are rolling towards a playoff spot as they own a nine-point edge over the fourth-place Wild in the Central Division and are also a mere three points back of the Chicago Blackhawks for second. Colorado did bring a three-game winless stretch (0-2-1) into Tuesday nights meeting with the Nashville Predators and escaped with a 5-4 shootout victory on the road despite never leading in regulation. Gabriel Landeskog scored twice in regulation and had the deciding shootout tally, while Cody McLeod and Nick Holden both scored to erase third-period deficits. "What I like about our group is we were resilient even if we were not playing our best game," said Colorado head coach Patrick Roy. Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves as Colorado reached 45 wins in a season for the first time since 2001-02. The Avs won a franchise-best 52 victories the previous season en route to a Stanley Cup title. Rice was originally handed a two-game suspension in July under the NFLs personal conduct policy after he was charged with assault following a Feb. 15 altercation with his then-fiancee in a casino elevator. The Baltimore running back had already served the first game of that suspension when, on Sept. 8, a video surfaced showing Rice punching Janay Palmer, now his wife, in that elevator. Within hours, the Ravens released Rice and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell extended the suspension to indefinite based on the "new evidence." Goodell and the Ravens say they never saw the video before Sept. 8. "This action taken by our union is to protect the due process rights of all NFL players," the NFL Players Association said in a statement. "The NFLPA appeal is based on supporting facts that reveal a lack of a fair and impartial process, including the role of the office of the commissioner of the NFL. We have asked that a neutral and jointly selected arbitrator hear this case as the commissioner and his staff will be essential witnesses in the proceeding and thus cannot serve as impartial arbitrators." The NFLPA said that the collective bargaining agreement requires a hearing date be set within 10 days of the appeal notice. It also said the hearing will require a neutral arbitrator to determine what information was available to the NFL and when it was available. The union, which had until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday to file the appeal, added that under governing labour law, an employee cant be punished twice for the same action when all of the relevant facts were available to the employer at the time of the first punishment. "The erratic and illogical system of ad hoc punishments is a paltry substitute for the leadership the NFL desperately needs right now," National Organization for Women President Terry ONeill said in a statement. "Roger Goodell must resign, and his successor must be fully committed to real and lasting change." Rice can apply for reinstatement when he convinces Goodell that he is "addressing this issue." With all questions about who knew what and when -- The Associated Press has reported the video was sent to NFL offices in April -- the league has hired former FBI director Robert Mueller to look into how the NFL sought and handled evidence in the domestic violence case. Soon after receiving the original suspension, Rice called his actions in the elevator "inexcusable" and apologized publicly to Janay, his mother, his teammates and the Ravens organization. He also addressed the length of the suspension, which came with a fine of three paychecks totalling more than $500,000. "I never planned to appeal any kind of punishment," Rice said on July 31. "So whether it was two games, four games, six games, eight games, I was going to own my actions and be a man about it and take whatever was given to me." At that time, he spoke about the damage his reputation received. "In some peoples eyes, Ray can do no wrong. Thats something I take pride in," he said. "I know a lot of people out there have lost respect, maybe not like me anymore. But thats my fault. I have to own that. Thats my battle each day."
