Its Monday and TSN basketball analyst Jack Armstrong starts the week with his five thoughts on the NBA including a struggling Raptors defence, a pair of impressive rookie point guards in the Magics Elfrid Payton, Jr. and Shabazz Napier of the Heat, a potential problem with the NBAs new replay centre and James Johnson of the Raptors. 1. RAPTORS D: Its just not good at all right now and its a bad sign when Dwane Casey has to continually harp on it. If this team wants to be good to very good, it better realize that you have to respect your opponent and the game and stop trying to take shortcuts to success. It dont come easy. You got earn it and that means a much higher price has to be paid on D. Its nothing to do with schemes or Xs and Os. Do you want to lay it on the line all the time or not? Yes, I know they had free throw issues against the Heat, but weve all seen the defence in the first three games. Its not going to cut it and its time to decide how committed they really want to be. The good news is, this is all very correctable, but winning is really hard to do and you cant ever lose sight of that. Enough said. 2. ELFRID PAYTON (Magic): I love his game and potential. Hes long and athletic with terrific defensive range. Payton changes speeds and can score and create for others in the lane. Hes got good size and, as he fills out and figures it out, will be a good one. I can see why scouts were intrigued by him. Hes won me over. 3. SHABAZZ NAPIER (Heat): Hes going to be a nice back-up point guard for his squad. Napier is more of a pure lead guard than Norris Cole and Mario Chalmers. He makes the smart play and makes others better. Hes a winner and plays the game right and really hard. Napier was a good late first-round pick. 4. NBA REPLAY CENTRE: I really like the concept and it will help officials get it right more and more and thats a good thing. But my one observation is that, during a review, both teams are going to get an unofficial timeout and its going to make games longer. Maybe the NBA can consider a way to charge teams with a timeout in these instances or just reduce the number of timeouts, altogether. If not, were looking at longer games and thats not good for anyone. 5. JAMES JOHNSON (Raptors): Hes been steady so far for the Raps by playing under control on the offensive end, while being an energetic force on defence. If he keeps this up, hes going to start taking some minutes from teammates. He makes plays with many of them being impactful ones. Thats a good thing and will earn him more run. Lucas Duda Jersey . After a sluggish start by both teams, Toronto began to take control. At times Toronto players were queuing up to take a shot. Outshot 10-5 in the first half (5-0 in shots on target), the Impact managed 10 shots in the second but only three were on target. Montreal made changes in the second half and began to finally test the Toronto defence. The Impact outshot Toronto 10-6 in the second half but only put three shots on target to Torontos two. When Montreal did find its aim, Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik was equal to the task. He stopped Davey Arnaud at point-blank range in the 53rd minute. And he robbed Andres Romero in the 88th minute. Montreal misfired the rest of the time. A 62nd-minute goal by Marco Di Vaio was called off due to apparent handball. Three minutes later, substitute Andrea Pisanu headed just wide. Andrew Wenger shot wide from in front of the net in the 72nd minute. Torontos goal had a hint of luck about it but was nevertheless deserved as the home side began to launch attacks with rookie Canadian midfielders Jonathan Osorio and Kyle Bekker pulling the strings while dominating Montreals Hernan Bernadello and Felipe. Toronto striker Bright Dikes physical presence also disrupted the Montreal defence. The bull-like forward set the table for the Earnshaw goal. Earnshaw had a fine chance in the 33rd when he and Dike broke in side-by-side down the middle during a defensive breakdown. Perkins saved the day, making a fine point-blank save. The Impact goalie was forced to make a fingertip save off Osorio seconds later as Montreals defence -- missing the injured Alessandro Nesta -- continued to crumble. Bekker hit the crossbar in the 38th minute from outside the penalty box. Perkins then had to tip an Earnshaw shot over the bar in the 43rd minute. Toronto came close early in the second half with a header from skipper Steven Caldwell deflecting off the bar. Caldwell had another chance in the 82nd minute off a corner but a Montreal defender made a goal-line clearance. "The only thing that disappointed me was we didnt get that second goal," said Nelsen. Toronto was coming off a 1-0 loss in Chicago, a defeat that stretched its league road scoring drought to six hours 45 minutes. Toronto has failed to make the playoffs since entering the league in 2007. While it has been another long season for TFC supporters, there may be light at the end of the tunnel.
